This diagram is an engineer’s representation of the mechanics of a tymbal. The “truss chain” and “resonant chain” parallel diagrams model the tymbal movement and the abdominal resonators, respectively. The tymbal’s function is called a truss chain because “truss” in mechanical modeling refers to a curved reinforced structure. The truss is an engineer’s representation of the mechanical behavior of one rib and its elastic connections to neighboring ribs through the membrane. The truss model has two stable configurations and alternates between them through snap-through buckling. The buckling between these states is called “bistability.” See a more exhaustive breakdown below panel B’s description. PANEL B: • Abdominal segment ; •• Alternate tymbal clicking ; ••• : Tymbal muscle ; •••• : Tymbal clicking ; ••••• : Hollow chamber. Rearrangement of illustration from Scientific American [3]. I have heard snap-through buckling and resulting resonance of the tymbal being compared to the tension and compression of a bendy straw [5], but that’s only correct as far as the movement between one configuration (compressed) and another (stretched out) causes an amplified sound due to the individual units (ridges in a straw) being connected by a membrane (plastic between ridges) within a resonant chamber (the rest of the straw). This is an incomplete comparison because: 1) The tymbal rib structure is not shaped like a bendy straw, 2) a tymbal’s ribs individually change between bent and unbent configurations, one at a time but quickly in a wavelike fashion modulated by muscle, not all at once like you would by using your fingers to compress/stretch a bendy straw, and 3) the cicada tymbal is far louder, due to its resonant structure. Think of resonance like tapping a bell and it rings loud - your finger taps a bell, but the sound is only loud because of the shape and material of the bell. Imagining snap-through buckling within a tymbal reminds me of the rolling velvet ridged hills in Fantasia’s visual rendition of Toccata and fugue in D minor (skip to 7:11). https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6955c16d1b5b1e1843165b86/bfff191a-1b02-4340-89e7-f034d9bac12d/Fantasia-disneyscreencaps.com-1143.webp Blog - Surrealist Figure 1: Cicada Tymbal - Make it stand out Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6955c16d1b5b1e1843165b86/9ca1db5f-e93b-428a-b00c-11efe804f305/Panel+A+Mechanical+Model+of+Tymbal+Sound Blog - Surrealist Figure 1: Cicada Tymbal - Make it stand out Just Panel A https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6955c16d1b5b1e1843165b86/570ff8af-fc42-40bd-977b-1e42194913dd/playlist.m3u8 https://video.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6955c16d1b5b1e1843165b86/570ff8af-fc42-40bd-977b-1e42194913dd/thumbnail Blog - Surrealist Figure 1: Cicada Tymbal Blog - Surrealist Figure 1: Cicada Tymbal https://www.acelane.studio/blog/burlap-dzcdd monthly 0.5 2026-02-23 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6955c16d1b5b1e1843165b86/26e224ed-4938-483f-bc17-351d386cd176/IMG_2410.jpg Blog - Painting on Burlap - Make it stand out Burlap paintings and linocut candle print https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6955c16d1b5b1e1843165b86/ae873af2-2ae6-4691-812f-4d9b744268be/IMG_9531.jpg Blog - Painting on Burlap - Make it stand out My first burlap painting outside of the class. When I know I want to make a piece of art for an occasion, I often order the frame before I start the painting. I use the frame as inspiration for the color pallet, shape, size, and even emotional tone of the art. This is because I like to order the frames from Signed and Numbered “In Stock and Assorted Frames,” which are a frequently-changing selection non-standard frames that may be returned or cancelled custom orders. They are sold at a much lower price than they would cost if they were made custom, so it’s a (relative) bargain. The frames are high-quality, so I like to think of them as part of the piece. I also want my art to last a long time, so I prefer to frame it before sending it out into the world. https://www.acelane.studio/home daily 1.0 2026-07-17
